In March 2006 a conference in Heidelberg marked the beginning of a long-term research cooperation between Chinese and German scholars. Joint meetings will further establish and maintain contacts to Chinese universities, academic institutions and individual scholars. Within this exchange the enormous potential of China's emerging interest in religion, religious studies, and theology has already become visible. At the same time the cooperation offers the opportunity to support Chinese research  in religious studies and theology in a critical and contructive manner.
The dialog between China and the West has benefited in particular from a common exchange on key concepts shared by Confucianism and Christianity, such as Law and Love, Mind/Spirit and Nature. Refining this approach, it has been the particular interestof FIIT not to isolate the discourses in the humanities from the one in the natural sciences, but to arrange constructive interaction between the two areas. Thus FIIT has organized a conference  with European, American, and Chinese theologians, philosophers and researchers in the natural sciences  in order to discuss the topic "Law and Love in China and the West".

At their first conference in March 2006 - "Philosophy, Theories of Religion, Christian Studies and Theology: A German-Chinese Colloquium" - the founding members of FIIT were joined by15 Chinese scholars of religious studies and philosophy from renowned universities. To explore common areas of interest, a wide range of subjects was discussed: the history of philosophical and religious theory, scriptural traditions and hermeneutics, sociological perspectives, and religious dialogue: China and the West.  See the agenda of the conference

In October 2007 the subject of the Chinese-German conference was "Law and Love: Philosophy, Religious Studies and Sciences in China and the West."  The meeting focused on two concepts that are very prominent Mboth in Confucianism and in the Jewish-Christian tradition.  Thus the subject served as a bridge that enabled researchers to engage in dialogue while their home contexts are characterized by very different cultural and religious factors. See the agenda of the meeting

In summer 2008 the circle of participants was widened to include researchers from the natural sciences, so that the subject "law and love" was discussed from an even more strongly interdisciplinary perspective.  Chinese and German thinkers were joined by scholars from the USA and Great Britain, adding subjects like physics, biology, and psychology/neurology to those subjects previously represented (theology, philosohy, religious studies).  See the agenda of the meeting

Moreover, in 2007 researchers from Taiwan accepted an invitation by scholars from the FIIT to engage in an interdisciplinary dialogue that encompassed philosophy, theology, and religious studies.  The thinkers not only discussed different perspectives on Biblical and other religious traditions, but in particular they focused on the encounter of different cultures and traditions of thought.  See the agenda of the meeting
